Take Back America with a Responsible Plan For Iraq

Our current Congress isn't doing it. But progressive activists aren't taking that lying down. At the Take Back America conference currently going on in Washington DC, we have asked an initial 10 progressive congressional challengers to sign on to our Responsible Plan for Iraq. The plan, which calls for no residual troops and a diplomatic "surge", will be announced formally here at the Take Back America conference in DC at 5:30 Eastern today. Brig. Gen. John Johns has also made a video supporting a Responsible Plan.

Darcy Burner (WA-08) (you can watch the streaming video of the announcement at 5:30 pm Eastern on her site)

Jared Polis (CO-02)

Donna Edwards (MD-04)

Eric Massa (NY-29)

Chellie Pingree (ME-01)

Tom Perriello (VA-05)

George Fearing (WA-04)

Larry Byrnes (FL-14)

Steve Harrison (NY-13)

Sam Bennett (PA-15)

We'll be adding more as we near the election. These are candidates that have promised us that they WILL work to end our occupation of Iraq and to support a progressive agenda.

Please reward these challengers at our Blue America page for support. This is our chance to create our "Contract For America" but this time, actually make things better here.

New York Times Defends Hiring William "The Bloody" - He's Respected & Serious

Via Editor & Publisher: (h/t The Huffington Post)

A day after the Huffington Post first reported it, The New York Times has announced that it has indeed hired conservative pundit, and Fox News analyst, Bill Kristol, as a new regular op-ed columnist.

Liberal bloggers had been up in arms over the move. Kristol said, in an interview with Politico.com, it gave him some pleasure to see their "heads explode." Kristol was perhaps the most influential pundit of all in promoting the U.S. invasion of Iraq and has strongly defended the move ever since.

Times' editorial page editor Andy Rosenthal defended the move. Rosenthal told Politico.com shortly after the official announcement Saturday that he fails to understand “this weird fear of opposing views....We have views on our op-ed page that are as hawkish or more so than Bill....

“The idea that The New York Times is giving voice to a guy who is a serious, respected conservative intellectual — and somehow that’s a bad thing,” Rosenthal added. “How intolerant is that?” Read on...

This will do little to convince their readers that he didn't just make a huge mistake by hiring a pundit who has zero credibility and is one of the biggest hacks in all of wingnuttia. Mr. Rosenthal, it is not intolerant of the American people to want truth and accuracy from the supposed paper of record. It's not about having opposing viewpoints, it's that Kristol has been wrong on just about everything he's said for the past five years. Not a little wrong, but really, really wrong. But according to Rosenthal, he's really serious and gee, people really respect him. Well, I guess that makes up for all of the propaganda...war-mongering partisanship...hackery that Kristol has been given a national platform for already.

Maybe we should take a look back at the very serious and respectable prose of William "The Bloody" about his new employers:

Chris Shays says the Surge is WORKING! Please support Blue America's Jim Hines

Is there any more of a reason to get "Blogger Rage" Shays outta here and support Jim Himes? Check his performance out on PBS's the News Hour. You go Jan! We've done really good so far. Jane Hamsher, who is hanging in the C&L Bat Cave today---says:

Yesterday’s $5 fundraiser for Jim Himes has netted 80 new donors to our Blue America page, and by way of comparison Shays only had 107 donors during the last quarter. So it would be great if we could find 29 more donors, which would mean Jim had more contributors in just over 24 hours from Blue America alone than Shays had during the entire second quarter. If you’ve got $5 to spare, think of it as a way to combat the useful idiocy of Brian Baird.

Contribute to Jim Himes via Blue America here.

By the way, Baird now is attacking the GAO report and get this

Meantime, Baird has so many requests for interviews that he already has offered a two-hour media availability Monday, after Petraeus and the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, testify before the House. Democrats opposed to the war held their tongues about Baird last week. But on Thursday, Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., told Congressional Quarterly: "I'll give Brian a gun and let him go to Iraq and shoot whoever he wants."

When asked about Stark's comment, Baird said, "What was that all about?"

C&L's Late Nite Music Club with the Dave Matthews Band

(guest blogged by Howie Klein)

Jonathan Powers will be our special Blue America guest tomorrow afternoon (2pm, EST) at Firedoglake.

When I interviewed him, he was excited about a Roger Waters live concert he was going to. Turns out he goes to a lot of live shows. In fact, this former U.S. Army captain-- memorialized both in the movie Gunner Palace and the book What Was Asked Of Us-- An Oral History of the Iraq War by the Soldiers Who Fought It-- has just turned 29 this month and he's probably the most enthusiastic music fan I've talked to among anyone running for Congress... ever.

I asked him to suggest a song for the Late Night Music Club at Crooks & Liars. I saw it was hard for him to narrow it down, but he chose a great one. "Whether it's sung by Dylan or Hendrix or the Dave Matthews Band or anyone else," he told me, "All Along the Watchower is a song that can carry you away. I was at the Gorge in Washington State about a month after coming home from Iraq and DMB played one of the most wonderful versions of this. Stefan, the bassist, led in with a bass line that just rocked your soul... and to be honest, I did not even know what was coming. Once they broke into Watchtower I was just blown away. Anytime Dave and Trey are on stage together... I feel that those two are musical geniuses of our generation. Throw in Tim Reynolds and it can just get scary. Whether they are covering tunes, or mixing Everyday and Bathtub Gin... a great blend... they are magical." Here's a video of the actual show Jon was at:
