Blue America Welcomes Bill Hedrick (D-CA)

We've been having a tough time finding even very progressive candidates willing to think for themselves on Afghanistan and not just go along with Obama and the Pentagon. Bill Hedrick, as you can see from the above video, is not one of those. Maybe it's because so many of his children are or have been serving in the military overseas, but Bill has a very clear vision of America's role in Afghanistan-- and it sure isn't as an occupier or as a nation-builder. We'll talk with Bill about that below in the comments section as Blue America formally endorses him in his race for the congressional seat currently held by one of the most corrupt men-- according to, of all sources, Fox News-- in the U.S. Congress, Ken Calvert.

Bill Hedrick has been a public school teacher in Riverside County, California for 35 years. And his wife is a public school teacher too. Bill is also serving his 5th term as president of the Corona-Norco School Board, one of the biggest in the state, responsible for over 50,000 children. In 2008 he stepped up and ran against Calvert. But a school teacher running against an entrenched favorite of Wall Street? The DCCC had no interest in helping-- and they didn't. Outspent 5-1, Bill ran an effective grassroots campaign and came closer to dislodging a Republican incumbent than any other Democrat in the country who didn't actually do it. Bill spent $191,461 and Calvert spent $1,150,432. Bill received 123,890 votes and Calvert edged him with 129,937.

This year is different... kind of. Sensing a winner, the DCCC has given Bill their blessing-- but not much else-- and certainly no money. So for Bill, it's all about volunteers and grassroots tactics again. But that makes sense for someone with deep roots in the community anyway. He told me that the big issue in CA-44, a Republican-leaning district that Obama won in 2008, is jobs and that almost all the other issues flow from that overarching one. Sometime he seems frustrated that the Democratic Party, Inc in Washington isn't getting it when it comes to the pain real people are feeling in the heartland.

The national Democratic Party needs to focus more on stimulus that supports small business recovery and job creation. In a region like this small businesses are the economic engines of recovery and job growth. The big banks aren't lending. I think the president is moving in the right direction but what we need is an infusion of money for community banks with an obligation that they will make loans to small, local businesses. Calvert voted for Bush's massive Wall Street bailout twice, a bailout with no accountability. I opposed that last time and, believe it or not, found some commonality-- on that-- with the Ron Paul folks who were also opposed.

Calvert has also been a big supporter of so-called "free trade," which is not how I see the economic future of this country and is exceedingly unpopular in this district. We've been hemorrhaging jobs. This district used to be a manufacturing area-- steel, light industry... but no more. NAFTA and policies like that sent the jobs overseas and those jobs never came back. Many in the Tea Party movement out here have stopped talking about all that anti-immigrant stuff and started focusing on the real problem: the old fashioned extreme greed that maximizes profits no matter what the cost to everyone else. People are starting to wake up to the fact that companies that became successful in America and because of America have been off-shoring jobs and have no loyalty to our country, our workers or our interests.

Calvert always claims to be an "independent voice for Riverside County;" it's baloney. He never differs from his party. I will do what's best for my constituents even if it's at odds with party policy. We need an emphasis on community banks, not Wall Street. We need job creation here and we seem to be stuck in policies that create jobs in China. We need policies that encourage manufacturing in the United States.

That's why Blue America is so enthusiastic about Bill's campaign. No one has to twist his arm to do the right thing. He decided to get into national politics because he sees the need to do the right thing. He's like the polar opposite of a Blue Dog. He has every intention of joining the Congressional Progressive Caucus and when he talks about being at odds with his party, it isn't because their policies aren't conservative and special interest-oriented enough; it's because they're too conservative and too oriented towards special interests. Bill has been and continues to be a man who analyzes the problems this country is facing through the eyes of everyday American working families, not through the eyes of the political and business elites that run both parties in DC. We need more Democrats like Bill Hedrick. Please consider contributing to his campaign, volunteering here and getting the real story on Ken Calvert (and by all means examine the official police report on his arrest for lewd conduct with a prostitute in a public park). In fact, if you have some time, here's the Fox News special on corruption in Congress, well worth watching beginning to end. Calvert's astounding section begins at around 25 minutes in.

Bill, welcome to Blue America. We're proud to be officially endorsing you today. I want to start the ball rolling by asking you a bit more about Afghanistan without going into the aspects you've already covered so thoroughly in the video clip above. Your reticence-- to put it mildly-- about escalating the war there make a lot of sense to me and to many people in our community. But it is diametrically opposed to the president's and the Pentagon's. Last June only 32 Democrats were courageous enough to oppose Obama's supplemental war budget. It looks very likely to me that you're going to be in Congress starting in 2011. Are you going to be a Democrat willing to stand up to the president when he's wrong about foreign policy?

Bill Hedrick's picture

Hi Howie. I would first like to say how proud I am to receive the endorsement Blue America, and I'm looking forward to talking with my fellow progressives today. Wanted to let everyone know that I'll be available until about noon, then I have to head out for a couple of campaign events. My campaign manager, Katie, will remain for a few minutes after I leave to answer any remaining questions or take down questions I was unable to get to and can hopefully get answered later.

As to the question of Afghanistan and supporting foreign policy, I will support foreign policy in so much that it advance the interests of a safer, stronger America. I do not believe that the war in Afghanistan is making us any safer or helping our interests here at home. When foreign policy is focused on humanitarian aid, when it focuses on diplomacy and strengthening America's reputation around the world after being battered during the Bush years, I will support the President and the policy being proposed. What I will not do is vote to fund war in Afghanistan or war in Iraq unless the money is being used to bring our people home. And if that means that Speaker Pelosi puts me in a basement somewhere for insubordination so be it. I'm not running for Congress because I hate my day job or because I'm trying to move up the political ladder. I'm running because I have fundamental disagreements with Ken Calvert and with many of the policies that have been enacted that I think do our country more harm than good. And if I find out in my first term that the only way you can get things done is by throwing your principles out the window, well, I don't want the job that badly. I want to help people get back to work and get this country headed in the right direction. If I can't do that with my integrity intact than someone else can give it their best shot.

Bill, do you think voters in Riverside County know that Calvert voted for the Wall Street bailout and that you opposed it? One would get a message from the national media that Republicans are the ones who opposed it. Calvert, of course, voted for teh bailout twice

Bill Hedrick's picture

Some know that, but we need to get that message out more completely. The bank bailout was very unpopular in Riverside County.

Bill Hedrick's picture

It really is pretty amazing that Clavert is doing all he can to run away from his own record--another example is the Stimulus--he voted against that, but he will be the first one cutting the red ribbon when the new infrastructure projects are dedicated.

howieklein's picture

Yeah-- especially the earmarked ones that are meant to directly enhance his own property values. (I want to urge everyone to watch the Fox News special below. It really lays it all out in terms of Calvert's overt corruption.)

Hi Bill,
As a former teacher--and now a school board president--what's your position on No Child Left Behind? Specifically, if you're elected, how would you propose to reform it?

Bill Hedrick's picture

Well, while the intent MAY have been to close achievement gaps, it has been trendously damaging in other ways. First, the punitive aspects of the law need to be addressed. Reward progress--get rid of the absolute (and unrealistic) bars of achievement. Growth models would be fair--hold schools accountable, but make it achievable. Second, fund the mandates. If you are going to order locals to do something, give us the resources. And finally, allow local control and decisions. This is a case where Washington doesn't know best.

I live in Oceanside and wonder if you could expound on how the housing bust affected your region and do you see the banks loosening their purstrings in your area?

The 44th district has been hit really. We've had a tremndous loss in equity--many parts of Riverside County well over 50%--I think Forbes listed us as one of the worst areas to ride out the recession. Some neighborhoods here have one-of-eight houses in foreclosure or delinquency. No--I don't see evidence of large numbers of modifications yet--and we need that. I would like to see the president lean on the lenders and get the money flowing. Now.

Bill Hedrick's picture

Please excuse the typos!

howieklein's picture

Is Chris Riggs, the Tea Party candidate, going to do Calvert any damage in the Republican primary? I know that the registration in the district has been trending away from the Republicans and now there are almost 20% Decline-to-state voters in CA-44. Your message seems sufficiently populist to appeal to those folks. I'm wondering if a reactionary like Riggs and a propgressive like yourself can both go after that same chunk of the population.

Bill Hedrick's picture

Chris Riggs has made Ken Calvert's personal "challenges" the center of his campaign. He certainly speaks for a segemnt of Republicans. We may well find some common ground as we did in the last cycle with Libertarian leaning voters who care about the Constitution. As far as we are concerned, we will talk to anyone--including our independent and Republican neighbors.

howieklein's picture

Bill, what makes you think Riverside County is ready to go directly from being a conservative bastion to be an area ready for a forward-looking progressive vision? It's very heartening that you're not running as a Blue Dog or a Republican-lite corporatist. What do the folks you meet out on the stump tell you they want from a Representative?

Bill Hedrick's picture

Great question. Here's what people want--they want a job--and at this point they are not too picky about where it comes from-either private or public secotr--but they want to make their house payment or rent. Secondly, they want health care that is accessible. When we talk about single payer and explain what it means, that is a pretty easy sell--lowering the Medicare age--people understand that. They want decent schools, and to be able to send their kid to the university without mortgaging their lives. What they DON'T want is to spend hundreds of billions of dollars overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan--they want the money here at home. They DON'T want more free trade agreements and the job losses we have experienced here.

howieklein's picture

Calvert has been very well-compensated for voting for the Wall Street bailout. He spent 5 times more money than Bill in 2008. Anyone who can do so, please consider making a donation to Bill's campaign here. Amato is on his way to meet with Timothy Geithner now or I know he'd be kicking in.

Amato or Geitner? :)

John always donates very generously to the Blue America candidates. He's been a real prince this year. If Daisy from Cool, California (that's the name of her town) is still on line-- THANKS for that nice contribution just now!

DemocratDarling's picture

HA!

howieklein's picture

Bill, can you explain your vision of healthcare reform? Is it just that straight-forward and simple: lowering the age of Medicare eligibility? And the folks you talk with in the district embrace it?

Bill Hedrick's picture

Here's the deal. It is a pretty stright-forward argument, and I think that the leadership of the party has missed a great opportunity. Peole understand Medicare and how it works. It isn't a foreign concept--it isn't scary--and if the President had pursued that option coupled with cost containment and stabilizing the finances through reprioritization, he would be a hero all the way around. Heard any Republicans (credible ones, that is) that argue to end Medicare....or Social Security? People here want a solution, not a convoluted scheme that keeps the insurance companies rich--and still denies care.

fiver's picture

. . . similar to the Senate Bill will be a plus or a minus for Democrats this fall?

Corruption favors the wealthy.

Bill Hedrick's picture

If that is all we've got, I think it will be a minor benefit--but it is hardly sweeping reform. And it is hilarious to hear the other side refer to the current plan as "government controlled." Really, the insurers still seem to be in the driver's seat.

I'm boarding a plane for DC amd wanted to say hi and thanks for the live chat!

Bill Hedrick's picture

Thanks so much. Have a safe trip!

howieklein's picture

I think in the past, the Republicans have done well in the Inland Empire by exploiting cheap phobias-- xenophobia, homophobia, racism, Islamophobia... the whole gamut of divisiveness. With the housing crisis and the unemployment situation do you think voters will really be able to grapple with the complexity of seeing how corporate trade policies have had an impact on ruining their lives?

Bill Hedrick's picture

Yes. People know that they have lost jobs, and that those jobs have gone overseas. They know that they are completing with folks making pennies on the dollar. They know that we are in a race to the economic bottom for working families. And they know that they are having trouble paying their bills. I think the cheap shots and fearmongering are just about done out here. We had a progresive message last time--it resonated--we are pressing that message now--and it resonates more than ever.

howieklein's picture

Bill, do people there know about-- and talk about-- Calvert's corruption? I mean, the Fox News investigation is pretty damning. I can't imagine anyone would vote for someone who was using his office to enrich himself that blatantly. Do voters just not KNOW about it? And him getting busted in a park... I can't believe people just let him slide like that. Maybe after two consecutive crooked Republicans people in CA-44 just start to think that's what congressional representation is all about!

Bill Hedrick's picture

Yes--we talk about the land deals, and will continue to do so. He really has not been called out on this issue, but he needs to be held accountable. Chris Riggs is doing it on the Republican side as well. The FOX News segment pretty clear and I hope everyone will take a look at that. We defintely need to get that word out in Orange County, though. I don't think they have a clear understanding of the situation. Those deals, though, are one of the reasons we carried Riverside County in the last cycle

DemocratDarling's picture

If anyone doesn't want to watch the whole thing, even though it is pretty interesting, the stuff on Ken Calvert is the fifth segment with the castle guy (his name is castle).

howieklein's picture

Bill, do you have a role for volunteers in your campaign? Is it worthwhile for people to sign up and donate their time?

Bill Hedrick's picture

Yes. We have a strong, progressive message. We hit the ground last time with 900 volunteers with a grassroots campaign. We need that many--and more--this time around. I hope folks will go to www.hedrickforcongress.com and sign up! We need YOU and can't do this without your support!

howieklein's picture

Thanks very much for spending the time with us this morning and good luck with the campaigning today. Next week we're going to have Jerry Nadler here at Crooks and Liars talking about his State Secrets Act and how he wants to help candidates who understand civil liberties get elected. You're one of the candidates he chose, a very high mark in my mind.

Bill Hedrick's picture

Thanks so much, Howie. I appreciate the opportunity to talk to folks. Have a great day! Onward and upward!

ShotoJamf's picture

I just discovered this post. Unfortunately, I came in too late.

I live in California's 44th, and have been voting against Calvert ever since he first came into office. His idiot positions have only gotten worse since that time. Mr. Hedrick almost made it over the top in 2008. Here's hoping that Calvert will get trounced in November of this year.

Go Bill Hedrick!
