[More of the same-- Heck and Baird, Inc.]
Brian Baird was one of the 39 disgruntled rogue Democrats who voted against health-care reform last November, along with a gaggle of mostly reactionary Blue Dogs-- from John Barrow (Blue Dog-GA) and Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (Blue Dog-SD) to Parker Griffith (Blue Dog, now R-AL) and Heath Shuler (Blue Dog-NC). Baird was the only Washington Democrat to cross the aisle and join John Boehner and Eric Cantor in trying to defeat healthcare reform.
State Senator Craig Pridemore, the Blue America-endorsed candidate for Baird's House seat isn't challenging Baird to a primary battle. Thankfully Baird is retiring from politics-- although not before endorsing a multimillionaire corporate lackey to take his place, Denny Heck. All the lobbyists, special interests and business-as-usual shills are backing Heck. Democratic grassroots and netroots activists in WA-03 are what's propelling Craig's campaign.
The video below explains Blue America's enthusiasm for Craig a lot better than I could in a few hyperbolic words. Please take a look at it as he explains why he supports a clearly flawed healthcare reform bill and how clearly he sees how corporate money is behind almost everything that's wrong Inisde-the-Beltway.
“As I’ve traveled around Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, one of the things that’s clear is that our citizens and our businesses are hurting. We need to step up and help our small businesses and workers succeed by implementing reforms to reduce their health care costs. The problem right now is that we have a health care system dominated by insurance and pharmaceutical companies and Wall Street.“I believe we deserve a public option. It is essential that we encourage competition in the health care market place, and the only way to do that is to hold the special interests in Washington, D.C. accountable to the struggling families across our nation. I also know that the bill before us means progress. It will provide coverage to millions of uninsured Americans and end the inhumane practice of cutting off those with pre-existing conditions.
“What’s clear is that my opponent, Denny Heck, is standing on the sidelines when it comes to this issue. He wants to wait it out, see what happens, and then decide where he stands. Make no mistake, I support health care reform and I support a public option and when elected, will step up and do everything I can to lower costs and check the power of the special interests in Washington, D.C.”
What hacks like Baird and Heck don't want to understand is that less privileged, more exposed families than their own, right in southwest Washington very much need the reforms offered in the health-care bill neither of them is supporting. Yesterday the House Energy and Commerce Committee put out a report that shows how the bill would impact Baird's constituents:
* Improve coverage for 478,000 residents with health insurance.
* Give tax credits and other assistance to up to 176,000 families and 16,800 small businesses to help them afford coverage.
* Improve Medicare for 116,000 beneficiaries, including closing the donut hole.
* Extend coverage to 53,500 uninsured residents.
* Guarantee that 12,500 residents with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage.
* Protect 1,500 families from bankruptcy due to unaffordable health care costs.
* Allow 61,000 young adults to obtain coverage on their parents’ insurance plans.
* Provide millions of dollars in new funding for 18 community health centers.
* Reduce the cost uncompensated care for hospitals and other health care providers by $21 million annually.
Craig has a long record of courageous, principled and progressive public service. He's a good investment for progressives! Please watch the video and consider making a contribution to his campaign.

In the Colorado caucuses last Tuesday, for the Senate, we had Michael Bennet, the anointed candidate vs. Andrew Romanoff, the proven candidate.
Bennet is an incumbent, appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter (who decided not to run for a 2nd term), and endorsed by the Democratic power structure, right up to President Obama. Bennet did nothing for anybody until Andrew Romanoff declared his candidacy. Bennet has received many donations from the Party, as well as numerous corporate sources.
Romanoff served in the Colorado House of Reps as Speaker, and has been the powerhouse behind several landmark bills. He is known for tireless efforts, and for working both sides of the aisle to get consensus. Romanoff accepts only private donations from citizens.
Bennet outspent Romanoff more than 5 to 1 in the campaign leading up to the caucuses. The result: 51% Romanoff to 42% Bennet.
How the primary turns out in August remains to be seen, but I think the caucus results are pretty telling. Money and big endorsements meant nothing.
He showed a lot of leadership in opposing the Iraq War and especially on the Israel-Palestine question. He visited Gaza with Keith Ellison and called for the US to break Israel's blockade.
I don't know about Baird's reasons for opposing healthcare reform, but that's not enough to make him a hack. At the moment Firedoglake seems to be opposing healthcare reform, for Christ's sake.
There are plenty of hacks in the Democratic Party, and Baird was never one of them.
Baird is an enigma. He mostly thinks for himself - I got to give him credit. But look at Grayson. He's in a PVI-even district and he sees what people need in his district. Baird represents the Chamber of Commerce too often. Rest assured, after "retiring," he'll make plenty of money lobbying.
is he wrapped in a puzzle?
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
Baird is NOT an enigma, and has shown 0% "leadership." Listen, he's my congressman, I've had to vote for this stinker because the alternative was some gun-crazy whackjob.
Baird hasn't taken any "brave" stands, he's simply voted for certain progressive causes that had no chance of succeeding. These are the bones he's tossed the liberals & progressives so they'll continue to send him cash. He was a big proponent of the reformation of the bankruptcy laws, which allowed creditors to go after you in perpetuity. He promised us the banks & credit card companies would then lower their fees. Didn't quite work out that way, did it Brian?
When it was time to take a real stand for progressive legislation, he's gone where the money goes. Simple as that. He grandstands for the liberals & has delivered bupkiss for 'em. You can take your Gaza-photo ops, I'd much rather have a REAL Democrat representative.
And Heck is just Baird 2.0, btw. The list of his local backers are pretty much the pro-development, pro-big business shills.
Baird and Heck are representative of their constituency.
I mean...the system works...doesn't it?
That's why we have bastions of morality and progressivism like Grayson and Kucinich, right? They represent their constituents...don't they?
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
I work in this little district. 66% of the districts population is in Clark County, basically the Vancouver suburbs of Portland, OR.
Suburbs suck. People say they move out here for the schools, but I think it's mostly that they are afraid of the diversity of the city (not just racial, but that's a part of it).
For a county that relies almost entirely on the economic engine south of the Columbia, these people really have a chip on their shoulder about Portland. And the further left the Peoples' Republic of Portland leans, the further right the vocal yahoos in Clark County want to go. So, what do they get? Bad zoning, a lot of traffic on wide suburban streets, and strip malls and chain restaurants.
Olympia is somewhat of a counterweight, but the suburban (me first) voters usually carry the elections. If only these people would realize that by voting Republican (or "Centrist" - I'm looking at you, Sam,) they are voting against their own interests.
Absolutely agree with you about the Couv - except I'm not sure they are voting against their own interest - they want to be away from Portland, but come here to shop because there is no sales tax. They don't want to pay for improvements to the bridge, but drive to PDX every day - and never doubt that racism is a big part of it. A friend lived there for a few years and worked with a number of Latino and African-American folks - he was shocked by the racism he encountered. Got the greed part right, though.
Heck and Baird are mirror images of one another physically as well as politically.
To boldly spam, where everyone has spammed before.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
"Hi, I'm here to see Congressman Baird."
"Oh, I'm sorry, he retired from politics just a few days ago."
"Is that right? Who should I talk to instead?"
"Sir, you need to go to Heck."
Saw an interview with Rep Baird on energy and he was very, very good on that subject, my main interest. Not saying that he's a good Rep or anything else. Just was impressed with his knowledge and approach to the energy situation. Even wrote him an email of support based upon it.
Zero leadership, has always played it very safe. I will never forgive Baird for standing on the steps of the Capitol in DC, alongside Tom DeLay, insisting that Terry Schaivo be kept alive. It is one thing to explain and discuss your feelings and opinions to your constituents. It is quite another to support the likes of DeLay.
